AUGUST - THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK, Wellington
One of the newest and hottest cafes has recently opened up in Wellington and it's called August.
We caught up with the co-owner Ben to get the goods on this fantastic little gem. Enjoy.
What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Ben and along with Tom and Nina we run two shops, Milk Crate and August.
What inspired you to open another coffee shop?
We wanted to provide something a bit more unique and exciting that shows off some of the extremely talented people that are around and about. This space came up and it seemed pretty well suited to what we wanted to do.
How did you come up with the name ‘August’?
It’s named after a creative and innovative Austrian, August Zang, who opened a bakery in Paris in the 19th Century.
He introduced the French to the croissant, invented the steam operated oven and unofficially invented the baguette. He then went on to found a daily newspaper and became some kind of press magnate.

How different is ‘August’ to your other cafĂ© Milk Crate?
Milk Crate has seats and a menu and is pretty cafe like. August does takeaway coffee and sammies.
It’s a pretty industrial open space without seats and is really oriented towards exhibiting things.
Who designed your super cool barista aprons?
Rachel and Anjali from Twenty Seven Names.
What will ‘August’ be offering the Wellington Clientele?
Real nice People’s coffee and fresh filled baguettes and croissants. Maybe some salads. Plenty of banter. We also host exhibitions of all sorts of art forms from fine arts to cuisine, motorbikes, drum kits, poetry and shit like that.
Tell us some words to describe ‘August’?
chicks, motorbikes, coffee, park, fabric, beer, fashion, wood, trip, craft , design, baking, trees, paint, culture, books, cheese, whiskey...
What inspires you at the moment?
Pies.
